Bayer Leverkusen Matej Kovar has admitted it would be nice for him to return to Manchester United at some point in the future.

The goalkeeper has been speaking to Rheinische Post about his career to date and a potential future return to Manchester United.

Kovar spent several years at Old Trafford, joining Manchester United’s U18s in 2018 and moving up the various youth ranks as well as enjoying loan spells at the likes of Swindon Town, Burton Albion and Sparta Prague.

He was never handed his chance in the Manchester United first team, though, failing to make a single appearance despite 53 for the U21s.

That led to him departing last summer, heading to Bayer Leverkusen, where he quickly established himself as the number two and made 17 appearances across all competitions last season as they won the Bundesliga and the German cup.

He’s more than happy with life and his future prospects of starring even more under Xabi Alonso but wouldn’t rule out a return to Manchester United at some point in future should it be on the table for him.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to leave everything behind at that age: the country, my friends, my family,” he said on joining United when he was 17 years old.

“But when Manchester United calls, you don’t have to think long. For me, a childhood dream came true. I had to take that chance.

“I was there for five years, enjoyed the time, met a lot of great people and matured as a goalkeeper and a person. I’m grateful for the experiences. Of course, there were ups and downs, but they’re part of life. Maybe I’ll come back one day, that would be nice.”
