Ajax duo Jurrien Timber and Antony are the two current stars who would be ‘suitable’ for Manchester United when Erik ten Hag makes the move to Old Trafford.
That’s according to De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, who says they are the obvious candidates for a move this summer.
Ten Hag is set to join Manchester United in the coming months, having agreed on a deal to become Ole Gunnar Solskaer’s long-term replacement once the season comes to an end.
He’s set to spearhead a major overhaul of the current squad when he arrives in Manchester, with it felt numerous changes are needed if he is to get Manchester United competing once again.
Several of his current Ajax stars have already been linked with moves, and Verweij says there are two obvious candidates.
“There are a lot of players who are in the interest of big clubs,” he told the Kick-Off Podcast.
“Gravenberch is working on a transfer; Tagliafico wants to leave. There will undoubtedly be interest in Haller. If you score eleven times in the Champions League, you are in the picture with big clubs anyway.
“If you have to name two players who are suitable for United, then that’s where he ends up. Timber and Antony.”
The prevalent belief is that the Manchester United squad needs a major overhaul this summer if they are to ever challenge at the top of the Premier League again.
It’s felt they need signings in several key positions, as well as getting rid of players from the current crop, the majority of whom have severely disappointed in recent years.
Indeed, there are plenty of Manchester United fans who would be happy to see all but a handful of the current squad sold off if suitors can be found.
The feeling is that the squad simply isn’t up to scratch, but Dutch duo Marco van Basten and Rafael van der Vaart are having none of that.
“I don’t think Manchester United have a bad squad at all,” Ajax Showtime report the Netherlands legend saying.
“At the back, they have to make some adjustments, but in midfield and upfront, they have enough quality. I’m convinced you can make a good team out of them.
“He has shown at Ajax that he can play very well in possession. In the Netherlands, defending is less necessary than in countries like England. With the current defence and the difficulty of organising things both offensively and defensively, it will be a tough job.”
“I also think that Manchester United has good players, and I believe in Ten Hag,” added Van der Vaart.
“He only has to watch his presentation. If you lose and you have to express yourself at a press conference, it’s quite difficult.”
