A couple of days ago, L’Equipe had an article in their paper claiming Manchester City’s Bacary Sagna (still contracted to the club until the end of the month) was a target for Marseille in France.
With very little backup to Hiroki Sakai, bringing in the France international makes sense, especially on a free.
That means high wages, but the Ligue 1 side have shown they are willing to meet certain demands for the right player (Payet, Evra etc…) even if they will never offer him what he currently is on at the Etihad.
However, the 34-year-old might not have a lot of choice but to accept their offer, especially since he still has hope of making Didier Deschamps France squad for the World Cup next year, and that means he needs regular first-team football.
According to La Provence in France, talks have already started between the club and the player’s entourage, but an agreement has yet to be reached regarding a future wage.
Marseille, for all their numbers in that area, need to strengthen in defence, and bringing in someone of Sagna’s ilk, even for just a season, would certainly help them progress.
Whether that will happen, we’ll have to see, but the first steps have been taken.
