Following the news that Gavi will be out for the foreseeable future with a severe knee injury, Barcelona are scrambling around to find some sort of replacement to help.
That’s where Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso comes in, as the Argentine was already a target for Barcelona in the summer, only for the midfielder to stay in London.
Mundo Deportivo have an article on the matter, and recall that the player stayed at Spurs with the hope of being an important part of Ange Postecoglou’s project.
That hasn’t been the case, as he is ‘playing little’ at Tottenham for the time being, but could be of huge help for Barcelona, where he is seen as a ‘market opportunity’, especially if the Premier League side make him available for a loan in January.
Lo Celso ‘perfectly fits’ the profile the Catalan club are looking for to compensate for Gavi’s absence, as he knows how to ‘play well between the lines’, blessed with a great ‘final pass’ and a ‘good finish’.
For those wondering how a club like Barcelona, already navigating tough financial waters, could afford the Tottenham player, Mundo Deportivo have another article on the matter.
They explain that back in 2020, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that clubs faced with ‘long-term injuries’ could no longer bring someone in in an emergency outside the transfer window.
This means Barcelona have to wait until January regardless, and they would be allowed to ‘sign a player who earns a maximum of 80% of Gavi’s salary until the end of the season’.
That’s where the Tottenham player would come in, and we will have to see what happens with the wages, because it all depends on what Lo Celso and Gavi are respectively earning in their clubs.
