Chelsea have received an unexpected boost ahead of their clash with Southampton, with Wesley Fofana back in the group.
That’s according to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, who reports that the defender is set to make his return for Chelsea in some capacity this evening.
Fofana had been expected to miss most of the rest of the season after injuring himself in the clash with Aston Villa at the beginning of December.
He’s been absent with that hamstring injury since, missing 22 games for Chelsea and spending 105 days on the treatment table.
Initial reports had indicated that the Frenchman could miss the rest of the season with the injury, a major blow for a player who already missed a year with a cruciate ligament tear and 120 days out with two separate knee injuries since joining the Blues.
Hawkins, though, now reports that Fofana is ‘back in the group’ tonight ahead of the clash against Southampton.
He doesn’t indicate whether Fofana is set to start the game or just be a part of the matchday squad, but we would presume the latter given his long absence.
Either way, it’s a major plus for Enzo Maresca and Chelsea, who are battling a raft of injuries in defence and will see Fofana’s return as timely.
