Borussia Dortmund will need to qualify for the Champions League this season if they are to sign Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea this summer.
That’s according to Sky Germany and BILD, who both say the German side have no chance of activating a €35m clause for the midfielder if they don’t get into the Champions League.
Chukwuemeka joined Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window after a frustrating year ruined by injuries at Stamford Bridge.
After a few weeks he ‘finally seems to have arrived’ according to Sky, with an impressive debut against Union Berlin over the weekend. He ‘initiated two goals’ in that game and left everyone comparing him to Jude Bellingham with his performance.
That naturally created excitement and if it continues, Dortmund will have a decision to make after agreeing a €35m purchase clause with Chelsea.
According to Sky that would be ‘a lot of money’ for the Bundesliga club, particularly if they don’t’ qualify for the Champions League. They current sit seven points outside of those places in the league.
BILD go into a little more detail, saying Chukwuemeka is the ‘new great hope’ at the German club after he made his debut and made an immediate impact. He was the starting point for two goals and his introduction saw the game go from 2-0 to 6-0.
The plan is now to use him as much as possible and build up his fitness ahead of making a decision in the summer.
Dortmund have already paid a €1m loan fee for six months and up to €6m in wages and they now need him to lead them to the Champions League so that money can be ‘loosened up’ to buy him from Chelsea.
BILD also say the fee would be €35m and there’s no chance of Dortmund paying that if they don’t qualify.
