Fully expected to leave Sunderland this summer even before their relegation to the Championship was made official, Fabio Borini is still a Black Cat.
The 26-year-old didn’t exactly have the most prolific season under David Moyes, yet, as we’ve said before, his stock in Serie A remains quite high following his time at Roma a few years back.
With this in mind, Lazio’s interest in him makes some sense, especially since they are currently looking for someone to play backup to Ciro Immobile next season.
Furthermore, Borini’s ability to play either up front or down the wings is something very much appreciated by Simone Inzaghi, as the Sunderland forward would add depth to two or three positions in one go.
There is no mention of how much he would cost, but previous reports from the same newspaper claimed the Italian could be available for as little as €7m.
The player’s agents met with Lazio on Tuesday, suggesting this story, which has been a possibility for over a month now, might have some legs to it.
After all, it makes sense for everyone involved.
Sunderland get rid of some wages and make some of their money back, Borini gets to play in the Europa League, and Lazio get someone able to cover a lot of positions for a relatively modest fee.
What’s not to like?
