If you’ve followed us over the past month or so, you’ll be fully aware of everything surrounding the Henry Onyekuru to Celtic situation.
The young winger, currently contracted to KAS Eupen in Belgium, tried to force a move to Celtic Park towards the end of the January transfer window, only to end up having to apologise to his teammates and the staff for his behaviour when it was clear he wouldn’t be getting a transfer this winter.
Celtic were reported to have offered around €1.5m for the Nigerian starlet, but Eupen wanted at least double that to let him go midway through the season.
Since then, the player has returned to the first-team, and even scored a decisive goal against KAA Gent two weeks ago, with Eupen very close to retaining their top flight status in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
Needing just one point from their next three games, the Belgian side are now looking to the future, which includes dealing with Onyekuru, who will want a transfer in the summer.
Whether Celtic and Brendan Rodgers return for another try at signing the forward remains to be seen, but there’s a strong chance KAS Eupen will cash in on him in the summer, as explained by the club’s director Christoph Henkel to DH in Belgium.
He said: “Our stance hasn’t changed regarding Henry’s status. We had already told him before his unexpected ‘leave’ during the transfer window that we would talk about his future in the summer. Not before.”
Last week, we looked at alternatives Celtic could end up looking at if Onyekuru ended up signing for someone else.
