Already criticised in the European press this week, Memphis Depay’s time at Manchester United doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better anytime soon, and a move away from Old Trafford might be the best solution for him in January.
Il Tempo on Wednesday go back to one of the first clubs to be linked with Depay, as AS Roma look for someone to replace Mohamed Salah during his stint for Egypt at the African Cup of Nations.
The first name on that list appeared to be Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri, but with the Swiss winger finding a bit of form, that name was quickly discarded.
The Italian newspaper state the Manchester United forward was actually offered to Roma and Luciano Spalletti, and state their ‘hook’ in this deal is the fact his agent is the same as Kevin Strootman’s, pointing towards him being the man behind this move.
Of course, no transfer of this magnitude is easy, and there are stumbling blocks, such as Depay’s wages.
Il Tempo make it clear the only way this could come off would be through a loan with a view to buy, with Manchester United taking charge of most of his wages for the duration of the temporary deal.
If the player is now getting offered around to various clubs by his agent, we’ve hit desperate times indeed.
