It’s only Wednesday and yet it feels like Newcastle United’s week has lasted a month already.

Tuesday saw endless claims about Unai Emery moving to the Magpies, as the club’s new owners search for the man to take them forward. The slant from England was very bullish, with it stated the Spaniard could even oversee Newcastle training on Thursday, whilst the media close to Villarreal seemed a little confused with the whole situation.

Villarreal denied they’d had any contact whatsoever from Newcastle, and the club’s president spoke about Emery respecting the contract he has with them. A positive slant for the Magpies is that the €6m release clause was backed up.

Following Villarreal’s 2-0 victory over Young Boys on Tuesday evening, a result which sees them well placed to qualify for the next round of the Champions League, Emery said he hadn’t outright rejected Newcastle, and was generally vague about the situation.

Regardless of that, reports quickly appeared in Spain to say he’d be staying where he is, and would reject the Premier League club.

El Larguero radio show has now joined the chorus explaining Emery will reject Newcastle. They say, via Mundo Deportivo, that the manager was touched by the reaction of his squad when they learned he could be leaving.

He’s ‘satisfied’ with Villarreal’s leadership, and the ‘reaction’ of his squad following the reports.

This one may not be dead yet, but if it is then perhaps Newcastle United will regret sending so many strong leaks out, because it appears to be that which has resulted in the circle closing around Unai Emery and him appreciating more what he already has.
