VfL Wolfsburg sports director Marcel Schäfer has hit out at claims linking youngster David Odogu to Leicester City.

Schäfer has been speaking to Kicker in Germany regarding the situation around young current German players and particularly his own, Odogu.

A report earlier this month indicated that Leicester were very much in the mix for the 17-year-old and had held initial talks about a potential transfer.

That report, from journalist Florian Plettenberg, explained that the player’s agents were sounding out the market about a potential move after the defender had indicated he’s ready to make the next step in his career.

Odogu has been impressing for Wolfsburg’s youth set up and for Germany’s U17s, where he was a key player for the side that won the U17 World Cup last year.

That had led to clubs asking about his situation and thinking about a move, with Leicester one of those to have held preliminary talks about him.

It seems Schäfer is more than aware of those rumours and is less than impressed by what he’s seen, believing that the player and his agents may be playing a dangerous game.

“I don’t think David made these headlines,” he said.

“I thought it was great that the U17s became world champions because it was a really good signal that we still have great talents and coaches in Germany who can cause a sensation around the world.

“We should be careful that the U17 title doesn’t turn the boys’ heads. Just because they have now become U17 world champions doesn’t mean that all of them now have the right to play in the Bundesliga.

“Now his career is really starting. It’s important that they don’t allow themselves to be blinded.

“Without applying that to David. But that’s the problem we have in Germany. Namely, that the players are now elevated to the throne and then dropped again. It’s something different, U17 -Becoming world champion or standing your ground in front of 80,000 spectators in Dortmund.”
