Marca, like the rest of the Spanish sport media, have been talking up Jan Oblak this season. There’s good reason for that, the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has been excellent and continues to show why he’s considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
To back up their gushing praise of the 24 year old Slovenian international, Marca have put some statistics together which perfectly fit the point they want to make.
Of course, another set of stats could be put together to have other goalkeepers come out ahead of Oblak, but what’s the use of stats if not to aid confirmation bias?!
Marca’s selection had a great result for Burnley stopper Nick Pope.
In the Burnley team after Tom Heaton picked up an injury, 25 year old Pope has impressed, and, according to how the Spanish newspaper have rated things, is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
Not only that, as far as Marca’s figures are concerned, the Burnley player is the 5th best goalkeeper in Europe’s major leagues this season.
Pope is credited with 29 stops, and a save percentage of 85.29%. It’s a shame this didn’t come before he renewed his contract, as there’s surely an extra few pounds worth of praise there.
