On August 7th, Marca reported Real Madrid’s Mateo Kovacic is ‘about to be loaned’ to Chelsea and they said deal could be announced soon, even insinuating it could have been yesterday.
The Croatian international has already expressed his desire to leave the Spanish club and AS now claims Julen Lopetegui was hoping to convince him to continue, despite knowing the player’s intentions.
After his campaign at the 2018 World Cup, Kovacic joined preseason training and the Champions League winners’ new manager is tired with the former Inter Milan’s attitude. He has already conveyed his displeasure to the leaders of the club.
Real Madrid received several offers for the 24-year-old, but they were adamant that their player is not for sale earlier in the transfer window. However, the former Spain coach’s decision to not keep an unhappy player in the dressing room has seen the 13-time European champions change their stance.
The La Liga giants are in the process of signing Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and when the two clubs were negotiating for the goalkeeper, the Blues informed Real Madrid that they would be ‘interested in the formula’ of taking Kovacic on loan.
Chelsea will not have a purchase option and this solution doesn’t convince Kovacic as he never intends to play for the Spanish side again. However, his employer are ready only for this agreement because Real Madrid still feel he can be an important player for the future.
Now it’s down to Madrid to convince Kovacic to take the loan without a Chelsea purchase option.
