Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has ‘the majority of the votes’ to replace Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid coach.
That’s according to El Mundo, who say it is a race between Ancelotti and PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino for the vacant position.
They report that the two managers are ‘in the final sprint’ to replace Zidane at the club, and talks are underway to make a deal happen.
Unlike earlier reports, the newspaper states that talks are underway with Everton over a compensation package for the Italian boss, stating that negotiations are happening between Madrid, the coaches’ agents and their clubs at the same time.
They explain that initially, the main candidates to replace Zidane were Antonio Conte and Pochettino, but the former has been ruled out due to his ‘imposing character’.
Pochettino, meanwhile, is worried that it will be difficult to get out of PSG, and so attention has turned to Ancelotti instead.
The Everton boss has ‘several assets’ that convince the Real Madrid board he is the right man: those are his ‘many years of experiences at the highest level, temperance, knowledge of the club, the city and the current Madrid squad’.
His entourage are refusing to confirm the news of yet but are quoted as talking of a ‘very busy’ day for them, which is about as big a hint as you can give.
Interestingly, El Mundo also state that physical trainer Antonio Pintus, who worked with Ancelotti during his first spell in Madrid and has been at Inter Milan with Conte, is also set for a return.
It seems then that they are set on a reunion at the Bernabeu, and talks are ongoing with Everton, who are likely to demand a big price to let Ancelotti go.
