Southampton are ‘trying to sign’ Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi this summer after his impressive performances in the Bundesliga this season.
That’s according to SportBILD, who say the Saints are one of several ‘middle class’ clubs in England chasing the 24-year-old’s signature.
Awoniyi has been impressing in the Bundesliga this season after joining Union Berlin on a permanent transfer from Liverpool in the summer.
He currently has 18 goals and four assists in 41 games in all competitions, and that has ramped up interest in his signature.
Southampton are one of the clubs ‘trying to sign him’, with them likely to lose Armando Broja when his loan deal from Chelsea comes to an end this summer.
They have a good chance of getting their man, too, with Awoniyi keen on a return to England after admitting it is his ‘dream’ to play in the Premier League.
One obstacle is his asking price, with Union looking to make a tidy profit on the €6.5m they paid Liverpool last year and making clear to his suitors that they’ll have to match his €20m release clause.
That’s a relatively big figure, but Southampton are seemingly keen nonetheless and in the race for Awoniyi’s signature.
