In January it was claimed in Portugal that Southampton were keen on Sergio Oliveira. O Jogo said it was more than simply interest, and a £4m offer had been tabled by Claude Puel’s side.
It was believable, if doubtful. Oliveira’s career may have stalled at FC Porto, but it was very possible Puel thought he could get more out of the 24 year old.
The Portuguese and English media played transfer tennis with the claims and likely made the situation into far more than it ever was. Things then got distinctly unbelievable, with it being claimed in Portugal that Oliveira had turned down Southampton, thinking he could get something better.
Oliveira ended up signing for Nantes on loan, and things haven’t gone swimmingly since.
The Southampton rumours were encouraged by the club’s scouting trips to watch Porto. However, since Oliveira left, the trips have continued. Southampton had someone watch the club’s 3-0 victory over Belenenses last night, report O Jogo.
Several players impressed, including winger Yacine Brahimi and defensive midfielder Danilo. Southampton’s target isn’t clear, but there’ll be hope he’s better than Sergio Oliveira.
