Southampton beat Inter Milan 2-1 on Thursday night, which wasn’t too much of a shock. The Premier League club are everything Inter aren’t, stable, calm, not constantly in a crisis with problem players.
It was still a huge achievement. Inter Milan are Inter Milan, whatever is going on at the club from week to week. The Italian press went crazy for Southampton’s victory, so much so we thought it was worth compiling the best bits… which you can handily see here.
One man who hasn’t let the occasion escape him is Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who is clearly thrilled to have been part of the Southampton team which beat Inter.
Speaking to BT in Denmark, Højbjerg explained: “Especially for the club, it was an extraordinary victory.
“Six years ago Southampton was in League One, while Inter won the treble.
“It says something that the past year has been a good development for the club. And especially this year with the Europa League. There was a headline that stated: Remember this night. To be a part of history and beating Inter is huge. And we still believe we can do even better.”
Højbjerg knows all about the big club experience, having been at Bayern Munich previously, but that hasn’t dampened his Europa League enthusiasm at all. As Southampton hopefully progress in the competition, the midfielder will surely want to rise to the challenge.
