Guido Carrillo and Southampton has been anything but a success story.
The striker, who arrived from Monaco for a hefty fee of around £20m, never managed to have any impact at St Mary’s, failing to score in his 10 appearances for the club, albeit getting two assists.
Soon after his arrival, he was sent to Leganés on loan for the 2018-19 campaign, where he returned for another temporary spell this season after many delays and attempts from Southampton to recoup some of their money.
His season in Spain hasn’t really been a success either, as the 28-year-old has only found the back of the net once in La Liga, and with no purchase clause in the deal, he will return, once again, to the Premier League club.
However, the Argentine has a plan in mind for his career, one that would see him return to his home country in the relatively near future.
Speaking to the YouTube channel Ezzequiel, relayed by El Dia, the Southampton owned striker was asked if he ever wanted to return to Estudiantes, the club that gave his first professional contract and ultimately earned him his move to Europe in 2015.
Answering ‘Yes’ to the question, Carrillo was then asked at what age he would like to do so, to which he replied ’31’.
Seeing as he’s currently 28 and has one year left on his deal at Southampton, that gives him time to find a new club in the summer, stay there a couple of years before seeking a return home.
Where that next step is, however, remains a mystery, but wherever he goes, the Saints will have to accept the need to cut their losses and get whatever they can just to at least get some of their money back.
