Despite Oriol Romeu recently claiming that he was happy at Southampton and owed a great deal to the Saints, the midfielder could end the transfer window at another club.
The news comes from Cadena SER journalist Nil Solà, who took to Twitter to reveal that Girona have taken an interest in the player, and there are now ‘open negotiations’ between the two sides.
Considering Romeu’s contract at Southampton expires in 2023, this could be a chance for the Premier League side to make some money from him, seeing as there doesn’t appear to be a desire to extend the relationship to date.
The journalist adds Romeu is a ‘wish’ of Míchel’s, the current Girona manager, and Quique Cárcel’s, their director of football.
There is one problem as things stand, however, and that is ‘the economic aspect’, meaning the player’s wages, as they are seen as the ‘main handicap’ for this to go through.
That suggests that if the La Liga side manage to overcome that somehow, the rest with Southampton should go rather smoothly.
We’ll have to wait and see about that…
