Having bought Crystal Palace defender Alex McCarthy this summer and with Fraser Forster seemingly the number one, Southampton buying a new goalkeeper wouldn’t make a lot of sense.
However, according to Kicker in Germany, that’s exactly what they tried to do as Claude Puel’s new club were reportedly interested in bringing Koen Casteels from Wolfsburg.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who joined the German club last summer from Werder Bremen, only made 17 appearances for the Bundesliga side last season in all competitions, but now he could be in line for the number one spot.
Playing the rest of the games was Swiss goalkeeper Diego Bengalio, but Kicker seem to think Casteels might dethrone him, and their information tells them the Belgian has recently rejected offers from three clubs: Mainz, his former club Werder Bremen and Southampton.
Whether ‘recently’ means this summer, it could very well be Casteels was an alternative to Alex McCarthy, and this interest is no longer relevant.
If not, then Claude Puel really wants to put pressure on Fraser Forster.
