Southampton are the new ‘favourite’ to sign Real Valladolid’s Mohammed Salisu this summer.
That’s according to AS, who report the player’s future ‘remains unclear’ after his agent suspended negotiations over a move to Rennes.
It’s explained that Valladolid had reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 side over a move but Juan Mata ‘paralysed’ the talks because he is focusing on the Premier League.
Salisu has been linked with several clubs in England, and the newspaper confirm that, citing SER Deportios Valladolid, saying there are Premier League sides that ‘are running’ for his signature.
These are Southampton, Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the former considered the new ‘favourite’ to sign him.
It’s not made clear whether Southampton have made an official bid but for Valladolid to have alternatives to Rennes and if the Saints are the favourites, it’s safe to presume they’ve offered something.
Valladolid, for their part, will not object to Salisu choosing where he goes next, so long as the bid matches Rennes’.
Indeed they have indicated they are expecting Salisu to leave and have already completed the signing of Javi Sánchez to ‘alleviate’ his departure from the club. Where that ends up being, remains to be seen.
