William Vainqueur is currently enjoying a succesful loan with Marseille, where he moved to from AS Roma during the last summer transfer window. With only one year left on his Roma contract, now is the time for Vainqueur and the Italian club to start looking for a permanent solution.
Roma aren’t going to loan 28 year old Vainqueur out for another year and then see him go for free, so this time something more concrete needs to happen. French newspaper L’Equipe report that Marseille could well snap Vainqueur up on a permanent, but there’s interest from other clubs, inclduing Southampton.
L’Equipe say that during the January transfer window, Southampton and Villarreal mades
approaches for the player. Both wanted to know his situation and whether a transfer was possible.
There’s every chance one or both clubs will return this summer, and whilst Vainqueur is happy at Marseille, there’s the small matter of a transfer fee to agree.
At the very least, this shows Claude Puel is looking to add a central midfielder for Southampton.
