For the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen the European press featuring a few stories on Sporting winger Gonzalo Plata, claiming several Premier League sides have been chasing him.
The Portuguese media recently backed up the interest from West Ham United, claiming they tried to get him in the summer, and mentioned that other countries have been naming Newcastle United in the race as well.
Now it’s time for us to get an update from South America, where journalist Christian Martin brought some news to Ecuadorian outlet Vitotvo.
He first confirms that Newcastle United ‘want’ the winger. Then claims that West Ham’s chase is something ‘informal’ at this stage.
Just like the reports from Portugal, Christian Martin also says that Gonzalo Plata’s tag price is €20m. Sporting only have 50% of his rights, so the other half goes to his former club Independiente del Valle.
The journalist also reported interest from Leicester City, as he allegedly spoke to Brendan Rodgers about it.
Gonzalo Plata only has five appearances for Sporting this season, and couldn’t show a lot at club level. However, he’s been drawing attention for his performances for Ecuador, and scored two goals in their last three games.
