French newspaper L’Equipe have a feature in their Tuesday edition on Thierry Henry, Arsene Wenger, and the dynamics between the two men.
To get some insight on what Henry and Wenger were like during the Belgium coach’s Arsenal career, L’Equipe turned to Sol Campbell who appears to have been happy enough to share some insight.
L’Equipe seem like they were really trying to drag stories out of Campbell about Henry and Wenger having blazing rows. The French newspaper put it to Campbell that it would be unlikely the two men wouldn’t have had any disagreements.
Campbell explained that when there’s two personalities which evolve together “It’s like two little tectonic plates which rub against themselves and sometimes create an earthquake!”
Once again Campbell made sure to say this is natural in any long relationship. The former Arsenal defender believes Henry and Wenger shared a special relationship because they share the same football philosophies: “They are both experts and eternal football students.”
Asked if he overheard the pair speaking about football, Campbell said: “I do not know, I do not understand French! They sometimes spoke in French, which I found a little impolite at certain moments. But I think they talked about football, of course, you know?”
Campbell says Henry and Wenger were constantly debating, and that may have had a chance to continue into coaching. The former English international completely backs Wenger’s stance that former players need to decide if they’re going to coach or be a pundit, because the two jobs don’t sit well beside each other.
