Sheffield Wednesday will not give up their scouting of Portuguese football.
Under Carlos Carvalhal, the Championship club ramped up their scouting in Portugal and they haven’t abandoned it since the manager left.
That’s not unusual, other English clubs have done similar after taking on Portuguese scouts after having managers from, or who had worked in, the country.
One example is Southampton, who have been scouting repeatedly in the country since former Benfica manager Ronald Koeman was in charge at the club.
On Saturday evening, Sheffield Wednesday were back window shopping with the big boys as a club official was spotted watching the 1-1 draw between Benfica and Sporting, reports O Jogo.
It’s one of the biggest matches in the Portuguese football calendar and the Wednesday scout was alongside others from Manchester United, Liverpool, Sevilla, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.
The Championship club aren’t going to be signing a star from either club, but there may be a possibility of getting a fringe player or youngster, potentially on a loan deal.
Youngster Joao Felix scored the equaliser for Benfica after coming on for his debut, and the 18 year old has already been linked with big money moves.
Convincing Benfica to let him go on loan to the Championship may be beyond Sheffield Wednesday.
