Having been linked with multiple managers in recent weeks, Tottenham look on the verge of appointing Paulo Fonseca.
Spurs sacked José Mourinho in April and their search for his permanent successor has been a long one.
Among the rumoured candidates has been Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui, and these links have brought back Spanish memories of the manner in which Juande Ramos left the La Liga side for the London club in 2007.
Tottenham targeted Ramos in the summer of 2007 and in August of that year, the 66-year-old admitted he rejected a ‘dizzying’ offer from the Premier League side to replace Martin Jol.
Having joined Sevilla in 2005, Ramos went on to win two UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Copa de Rey and Supercopa de España with them.
Ramos and the Dutchman started the 2007/08 season with Sevilla and Spurs respectively, and in October 2007, the English club sacked Jol and replaced him with Ramos a day later.
Estadio Deportivo state Tottenham have their sights on Lopetegui, but he isn’t top of their list. These links mean ‘the shadow of Juande Ramos is there again’.
It’s claimed the situation is different this time around as Sevilla are ‘not afraid’ that Ramos’ case will be ‘repeated’ with Lopetegui, because the ‘circumstances are not the same’ now.
Lopetegui, who recently signed a new deal until 2024, has started plans for next season and he ‘aspires to achieve great achievements’ with Sevilla. He’s not going to be tempted by Tottenham in the way Ramos was.
