Towards the end of his time with Sevilla, Monchi was repeatedly linked with a move to Barcelona. The transfer guru hugely impressed in Spain and that Barca would have been interested is no surprise.
The Catalan media presented Monchi as an option many times, but after he left Sevilla, and had a break, he ended up at AS Roma instead.
Now Mundo Deportivo present one of the big reasons why.
Sevilla allowed Monchi, who had complained of exhaustion, to leave without any contractual obligations. He still had a deal with Sevilla, which would have run to 2020, but due to all he’d achieved for the club he was able to cancel his contract.
There was one condition from Sevilla for that to happen… that Monchi wouldn’t move to another La Liga side. That ruled out Barcelona, as they would have had to negotiate with their Spanish rivals, and it was clearly something that neither the club or Monchi were relishing.
Roma were then able to swoop in and didn’t have to pay any compensation to Sevilla.
