Two days ago, we relayed news from Gazzetta dello Sport that Genoa could turn to Newcastle’s Achraf Lazaar if Diego Laxalt were to leave the Serie A club this summer.
Well, in Wednesday’s edition, it seems the Uruguayan could very well be on the exit path, meaning the Italian side has now stepped up their efforts to find a replacement.
The two targeted alternatives are said to be the aforementioned Newcastle defender and Napoli’s Ivan Strinic, pushed to one side by Maurizio Sarri after the purchase of Mario Rui.
Gazzetta explain Genoa have now taken it upon themselves to enquire about both Lazaar and the Croatia international, although the outcome of this probing has yet to be revealed.
Looking at the left-backs’ situation at their respective clubs, it seems unlikely either would block an exit, especially when considering how little Rafa Benitez used the Morocco international last season.
Making a grand total of four Championship appearances after his transfer from Palermo last summer, it seems Lazaar did anything but impress the Newcastle manager over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.
