Jan Vertonghen is injured. That sounds like bad news, but for Belgium it may actually be quite bright.
Belgian newspaper HLN report on Monday that Vertonghen has a slight ankle injury, but there’s still going to be a scan to make sure there’s no ‘internal damage’ to the defender’s ligaments.
Should Tottenham be able to confirm that, then the situation suits Roberto Martinez. Vertonghen gets a little rest right at the end of the season, and it gives a chance for Toby Alderweireld to get some games.
With Vertonghen playing over 40 games for Tottenham, and counted on repeatedly by Mauricio Pochettino, a game out won’t be the end of the world.
Alderweireld, on the other hand, could do with some game time, so that the situation works perfectly for Martinez and his national plans.
With the World Cup on the horizon and a chunk of his most important players coming from the Premier league, Belgium’s manager will be well aware of the wear and tear they’ll be bringing from England.
