Every time a Brazilian player is involved in a big transfer in Europe, we see stories from South America pointing out there’s one of his former clubs rubbing hands about the percentage they’ll get from the move.
Since the rumours about Antony and Manchester United started, we’ve seen reports wondering how much São Paulo would receive from the sale, as besides the rights of being his youth club, they also agreed to get a percentage from the profit Ajax will make.
It turns out that according to recent reports from Brazil, the Tricolor are going through a difficult financial phase and the squad haven’t been receiving their image rights payments and bonuses. Since it’s common for Brazilian clubs to pay more in image rights than in salary, that’s a huge problem.
According to journalist Jorge Nicola, players who are ‘leaders’ at the club went to speak to the board about the issue this week, as they haven’t been paid for three months.
It turns out São Paulo directors have been claiming that with Antony’s ‘possible’ transfer, which ‘should happen in the coming days’, as ‘the attacker will switch Ajax for Manchester United’, the club will be able to sort out all their problems.
Nicola mentions the total value as being between €80m and €100m, with the Tricolor getting nearly €14m from it, so that’s something big for the Brazilian side.
