In the early hours of Monday morning, as part of El Transistor’s two hour programme on Onda Cero, serious claims were made about the future of Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo.
Now, there’s a lot of things we’ll do at Sport Witness to judge by an original source, but listening to two hours of late night Spanish radio, including a ‘lengthy interview with the socialist candidate for mayor of Madrid’ isn’t among them.
Therefore, we’ve had a look at the takes around the Spanish media.
AS say it was claimed on Onda Cero that Rodrigo wants to leave Atletico and has told both the club’s board and his agent. The reasoning is because of interest from other clubs, with Manchester City highlighted.
Interest from the Premier League club was first reported by the same radio show last week.
Pep Guardiola is looking for a Fernandinho successor, and 22 year old Rodrigo is thought to be a candidate.
Sport say the same, adding that Manchester City ‘could’ pay the player’s €70m clause.
However, as often happens with claims from Spanish radio, it’s already been denied.
Mundo Deportivo say that nobody from the player’s circle has said anything of the sort to Atletico. The club haven’t heard anything either, and Mundo add: ‘All parties are somewhat surprised at what has been made public, and deny that it occurred. They do not know the origin of the information but they clarify that today there is nothing.’
That doesn’t mean a transfer to Manchester City, or anywhere else, has been completely ruled out.
Barcelona are also said to be interested, given that one day they’ll have to accept Sergio Busquets won’t be around forever.
