Normally, whenever we see the name Issa Diop in the European press, we expect Manchester City to be following close behind.
However, for the first time in a while, that hasn’t been the case, as Mundo Deportivo fail to mention them in their list of clubs interested in the young defender.
The 21-year-old was said to be a target for the Spaniard, with Manchester City ‘concretely expressing’ their interest over a year ago, while L’Equipe expected them to make a move for the now Toulouse captain last summer.
That never happened, and the Premier League leaders eventually signed a centre-back in January in the shape of Aymeric Laporte for €65m.
We’re not 100% sure this is the end of this, considering Nicolas Otamendi is over 30, and Vincent Kompany struggles to play more than three league games in a row without getting injured or needing a rest.
It could just be that, having bought Laporte, Guardiola is focusing his attention elsewhere for the time being, but if he does still want Diop, he’ll need to be wary of the fact his former club Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter, Arsenal and Tottenham are all also allegedly keen on the centre-back.
