Having only just bought Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal for £40m towards the end of the transfer window, Liverpool are already targeting the next Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Well, sort of.
According to Le Parisien, the Reds could end up in a fight with the likes of Tottenham and Southampton for Elye Wahi, Caen’s 14-year-old prodigy.
Playing for the first time with his club’s U17s at the weekend, the forward scored both goals in a 5-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, keeping his impressive goalscoring form.
‘Impressive’ might actually be an understatement here as Wahi scored 89 goals with the club’s U14s and U15s last season, hence the upgrade to the U17s this time around.
As for why the likes of Jürgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino are said to be keeping an eye on him via their scouts, it’s because he’s pretty much the whole package, described as a ‘powerful, technical, quick and agile forward’ by a scout for big European club.
Furthermore, a talent-spotter from a Premier League side told Le Parisien: “He’s a player with a lot of potential. He reminds me of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain”.
Funnily enough, Wahi isn’t the only player both Liverpool and Tottenham are fighting over currently, with Werder Bremen’s David Philipp also in the news after catching the eye of Klopp and Pochettino over in Germany.
Could this rivalry for youngsters become a regular thing?
