A long-time target of Marcelo Bielsa dating back to when he was still at Boca Juniors, Nahitan Nández could very leave Cagliari this summer.
Doing well for the Serie A side, the Uruguayan midfielder has caught the eye of bigger clubs with his performances, with the likes of Leeds United, Inter and AS Roma all wanting to sign him this summer.
Those are the names local website Centrotrentuno put out on Wednesday in an article dedicated to the player’s future, looking at where the Cagliari star could end up.
While he does have a €36m release clause in his contract, the belief is that those in charge of the Sardinia based club won’t ask for that much.
Furthermore, while Inter and Roma would like to include counterparts in any deal for Nández, Leeds aren’t in that position.
The website state that in the case of the Elland Road club, ‘all that remains is to raise the cash to satisfy the requests of Cagliari’.
They have the money, and none of their younger players will want to go to the Serie A side as part of an exchange, unlike those of Inter or Roma.
Not only that, there is also ‘the purely sporting aspect that sees the Yorkshire whites behind the two Italian competitors’, meaning that ‘although they were protagonists of an excellent Premier League campaign, they will not play in the European Cups next season’.
Inter, on the other hand, have Champions League football to offer, while AS Roma qualified for the Europa Conference League.
That means Leeds, Andrea Radrizzani and even Bielsa will need to be convincing to dismiss those concerns, perhaps by making promises to the player to get him to forget about all the European football he could be getting elsewhere.
