El Confidencial is a major Spanish media outlet, and when it comes to football they often specialise in big features on Real Madrid and Barcelona.
On Sunday, as a break from the norm, their major story is about a Rangers player – A celebration of Ianis Hagi.
Boxing Day saw Rangers beat Hibernian 1-0, thanks to a goal from Hagi which was assisted by Kemar Roofe.
Hagi was the star of the show for Steven Gerrard’s side, and his goal has seen Rangers go 16 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Celtic may have three games in hand, yet what’s happening in Glasgow is taken by the European media as Rangers marching to the title under Gerrard.
Several players have been the subject of gushing praise from European newspapers in recent months, with James Tavernier impressing the Italian media recently. That then saw claims of possible interest from Serie A, and the same is likely to happen for Hagi from various leagues.
El Confidencial say Hagi is very fond of Spain, and spends his summer holidays at a villa in Mallorca. His father bought this whilst a star with Barcelona and it’s stayed in the family since.
That nugget of information isn’t presented as a direct transfer claim, yet it’s clear what they’re getting at, especially when they say Sevilla and Barcelona have been keen on Hagi in the past.
All of this can only be good for Rangers. People are sitting up and taking notice and if players are to be sold then it’s helpful to build their profiles and potential interest. It will also help Gerrard when it comes to tempting players to move to Ibrox
