Former Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has revealed he enjoyed his time at Ibrox, but became frustrated towards the end.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Gattuso was asked about this time at Rangers: “I loved my time at Rangers. I loved the passion and intensity of the Old Firm derby. Those matches were more than just football games.
“The biggest complication there was that the manager Dick Advocaat wanted to play me at right back. I didn’t want to play right back, which was very frustrating.”
Gattuso spent just over a season with Rangers after being signed by Walter Smith, and became a cult hero among the fans during his short stay with the club.
However, the Italian’s fortunes changed when Advocaat replaced Smith at Ibrox, and the player was continually played at right back by the Dutch coach.
The former Italy international was subsequently sold for €4m to Salernitana just months into the 1998/99 season, and the player would then go on to become a major star in Serie A with AC Milan.
In 2015 Gattuso said he would be interested in returning to Rangers as their manager, but only when the club sorted out its internal problems.
Graeme Murty is currently in charge at Ibrox and Gattuso is in the AC Milan hot-seat, but with the Italian club going through managers quickly in recent years, the Rangers cult hero may have a chance to return to Scotland in the not too distant future.
