Fixing Manchester United is ‘not an easy task’ for Ralf Rangnick, who is working against the mistakes that have been made in the past.

That’s according to former German football Stefen Effenberg, who says it is no coincidence that United have struggled for several years.

Rangnick arrived to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the beginning of December, initially arriving as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

At that point, he is expected to step back from the managerial position and take up an advisor role at the club, working with the new Manchester United manager to get things back on track.

Should things go as expected, he will be a director of football in everything but name, an appointment Manchester United fans have been calling for, for several years.

There are doubts about whether Rangnick is the right man, though, with his stint as manager so far yet to overwhelmingly convince either fans or pundits.

Effenberg, though, has moved to defend his compatriot, insisting righting the ship is no easy task at Old Trafford.

“One thing first: the fact that a global club that is so well positioned financially has not won an important title for years cannot be a coincidence,” he told Sport Buzzer.

“Mistakes have been made, wrong decisions have been taken.

“Despite all the problems and the great competition, the club’s and the fans’ self-image still includes going far in the Champions League and finishing at least in the top four in the league.

“This is not an easy task for Rangnick, who has to deal with many problems.

“(Cristiano Ronaldo) that’s another Rangnick construction site. For United fans, Ronaldo is untouchable for life because he has done incredible things for the club.

“In purely sporting terms, for all the class that still exists, he is past his zenith. A goalkeeper or defender at 37 can perhaps still consistently deliver at that level. As a striker, that is much more difficult nowadays, almost impossible.”
