Rafael Benitez has granted a lengthy interview to Marca.

The Spanish newspaper often ask leading questions, and ones which encourage controversial answers, but that wasn’t the case this time, with Newcastle United’s media officer sitting in throughout, perhaps as a warning to Marca to keep things down the middle.

Despite that, Benitez has come up with at least one answer which will generate waves, and that’s a nod towards the Liverpool job. Marca didn’t dare ask about a potential return to managing at Anfield, but Benitez handed them the quote on a plate.

Asked about the Spain national job, Benitez replied: “And I always say the same with respect: for the moment I don’t consider it. I am happy here and I have years of contract. It depends on how my career evolves, we will go on one side or the other.
If we do it here very well, we can finish the work in these parts; and if not, obviously, the selection can be a footnote.

“You have to leave it there, and see what happens in a few years. And the same in relation to Liverpool. It depends. Maybe I’m still here and I’m not moving anymore.”

Despite being Newcastle manager, and away from the Anfield job since 2010, Benitez still has a place in the hearts of many Liverpool fans, and also a place on the Wirral.

Newcastle United are currently in 7th place in the Premier League, and Benitez is certainly having a better season so far than Jurgen Klopp, who has Liverpool in 9th position.
