The situation at Manchester United ‘could quickly turn into a catastrophe’ and the issues at the club are not simply down to ‘bad luck’.

That’s according to journalist Florian Schmidt-Sommerfeld, who has laid into the club after another disappointing start to the season.

He has decided to take a look at Manchester United and their ‘botched start to the season’ today and isn’t impressed by what he has seen.

He says he has watched their five games this season and is now at a point where he is concerned that things at Old Trafford ‘could quickly turn into a catastrophe’.

That, in his eyes, would be a failure to qualify for the Champions League, a race in which they are already seven points behind those who have started well, such as Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Schmidt-Sommerfeld can see them potentially catching Spurs but doesn’t see that happening with the other two, and certainly not Manchester City either.

That’s because Manchester United are yet to offer up ‘a single really good game so far’, with even their win over Wolves a contentious and fortunate one.

The big issue seems to be the defence, where the absence of Raphael Varane has been sorely felt and everyone, bar Lisandro Martinez, doesn’t look up to the mark.

Varane is just one of several injury issues and that leads Schmidt-Sommerfeld to question ‘what the medical department actually does’. Like with the transfer window and the club’s business in that, ‘you can’t always be so wrong because of bad luck’.

Then there’s Erik ten Hag, who turned things around last season but has been a ‘shambles’ at the beginning of this. He needs to turn things around quickly but the fear is that if Manchester United continue how they have been, there’s a hammering on the cards from Bayern in the Champions League.

Fortunately for the Dutchman they have a relatively easy Champions League group but if they fail to overcome the likes of Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen, Schmidt-Sommerfeld doesn’t ‘even want to think what will happen’.
