On loan from Swansea City for the whole season, Bafétimbi Gomis’ return to French football with Marseille has gone rather well.
With 23 league games under his belt, the 31-year-old striker has already scored 14 goals, adding another one in the Coupe de La Ligue, taking his tally up to 15 for the season.
Adding to his tally midweek with a diving header against Guingamp, Gomis could see his tally rise even more in coming weeks if former West Ham player Dimitri Payet hits the ground running with his old-new club.
Rejoining his former club for around £30m in January in a rather controversial transfer, Payet managed to also get on the scoresheet against Guingamp with a deflected free-kick looping over the already committed keeper.
With a game against Nantes at the weekend to look forward to, Gomis spoke to reporters after the midweek clash, and spoke about his new teammate’s decision to leave West Ham this winter.
The Swansea loanee said, relayed by Le10 Sport: “I’m very happy he scored on his first start at the Vélodrome. It shows his determination. He showed it by coming here when he was in a rather comfortable situation in the Premier League. He was one of the stars of that league.
“He proved his love for Marseille by coming back. It’s a choice that shows who he really is. I wish him a long and great time with the club. He did something that a lot of players wouldn’t have.”
West Ham fans and Slaven Bilic won’t see it that way…
