With the club season now over, Victor Lindelöf will have hoped to head off to the Sweden national team to forget about the entire situation at Manchester United.
However, an injury niggle followed him there, with Janne Andersson revealing the centre-back has had to drop out of the squad entirely for the upcoming four games.
Announcing the decision during Monday’s press conference, the Sweden manager gave the latest on the Manchester United player.
He said, relayed by Aftonbladet: “He has had recurring injury problems that need to be healed. Victor is our team captain, and has been a very important player during all my six years. He’s never disappointed me, so it’s a big blow. At the same time, it is the way it is.”
Andersson was then asked, with four games in two weeks, if there was any chance the player could have stayed with the squad, recovered, and then still been able to feature.
The manager clarified: “It was so problematic that we saw no chance that it would be good. It’s then better that he’s free. He has had problems for a long time, so I absolutely felt this. I was visiting him a few months ago, and we had a dialogue about it already then. We have talked almost every day and realised it will not work.”
With Lindelöf one of the three main current centre-backs at Manchester United alongside Harry Maguire and Raphaël Varane, there will be hope this can be sorted out before pre-season.
After all, Erik ten Hag will want to evaluate as many of the current squad as possible before making a decision on their future, although those of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are probably already sealed.
