In what will be welcome news for everyone at Philippe Clement’s side, former Rangers youngster Dapo Mebude is on the mend after his life-threatening car crash that threatened to bring his career to an end.

That’s according to Gazet van Antwerpen, who cover the player today and how things are going in the ‘right direction’ for the 22-year-old.

Mebude joined KV Oostende in September 2022 from Watford, having failed to impress for the Championship side since joining them on a free transfer from Rangers in 2021.

He had spent the entirety of his early career at Ibrox, moving through their various youth ranks and up to the B team by 2021 but only managed one 27-minute appearance in the first team before his departure for England.

He would have been hoping to kick on in Belgium and get his career on track, but he’s so far only managed eight appearances, and a serious car accident at the beginning of January has not helped.

The former Rangers man was involved in a serious accident on January 7th that required him to be removed by the fire brigade and then taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

That naturally sparked concern around Belgium and indeed at former club Rangers, with the incident widely covered in Scotland thanks to the youngster’s past at Ibrox.

He’s been battling back ever since and now his agents have provided a positive report, although there is no timescale on a return as yet.

“Dapo is now back home and is working hard on his way back,” Bram Keirsebilck told the newspaper.

“He is still being closely monitored, but things seem to be going in the right direction. Next Thursday he will kick off during the semi-final match of the Croky Cup against national champion Antwerp.

“So that’s looking better and better. There is no exact date for his return yet.”
