As you’ve probably have seen in a few articles at Sport Witness, the Portuguese press has coverage of Portuguese managers and players on a daily basis, always reporting what their guys are doing in foreign leagues.
That’s why Wolverhampton Wanderers got a lot of attention from local outlets last season. A club that was previously ignored by that media now gets the same attention as European giants like Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Now that the season is over, O Jogo had the idea to report on all the Portuguese players and managers who won titles outside the country.
And it turns out that it’s an interesting story to read and see why Wolves make such a big noise in the local press for their big number of Portuguese stars.
In total, 38 Portuguese players have won trophies for 21 different foreign clubs this season. Five Portuguese managers also managed to lead their clubs to titles.
Two clubs had three Portuguese players in their squad: AEK from Greece and Cluj from Romania. And that’s when you see the difference at Wolves, since the Molineux side had six Portuguese players, plus manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
That’s why O Jogo has an entire part of the story dedicated to the Championship winners. They show that from the 82 league goals scored by Wolves this season, 38, or 46,3%, were scored by Portuguese players.
The most responsible for these numbers was Diogo Jota, who scored 17 Championship goals in the season, making him one of the top five scorers in the tournament.
After so much about Portuguese players, O Jogo actually ends their article praising the work from Fosun group, who are bringing the club back to the Premier League.
“The Chinese group Fosun, owner of Wolverhampton, was careful in the choices and fans are now seeing the return to the golden age, predicting even higher flights among the greatest of English football.”
