Wolves fans probably don’t need an introduction to the Ruben Neves rumour. As heavily reported in the past few days, the Portuguese papers all believe the midfielder is heading the the Championship side in a €18m deal.

That’s what newspaper A Bola reported on Saturday. Like other outlets such as O Jogo and Record, they claimed the Wolves deal was pretty much done and the player would join his old boss Nuno Espírito Santo.

That’s why when we saw a headline saying ‘Ruben Neves closer to signing‘ on Monday, we thought A Bola were just confirming their previous claims. But no. They’re now just covering news from the British press, without even mentioning the information they’ve published over the past few days.

The story only has a couple of lines from English papers saying the deal is closer to being done, but the outlet doesn’t use it to confirm or deny the Neves to Wolves story. Something pretty strange.

Did A Bola just back down on the rumour? Or they don’t want to jump the gun so soon? The second option wouldn’t make much sense, because they’ve already confirmed the deal before.

In Portugal there often seems an eagerness to have their stories backed up from media elsewhere in Europe, and that could be what this is. With no real leap forward on Neves to Wolves on Monday, perhaps A Bola are using claims as a source of comfort.

Tuesday’s Portuguese newspapers should reveal more.
