It’s with quite a bit of surprise that the Portuguese press took the news that Watford may not want to keep Andre Carrillo at the end of the season.
It was the Watford Observer who theoretically claimed the Hornets are unlikely to buy the player from Benfica once his loan deal is done, and that wasn’t expected by the Lisbon papers.
Outlet Record recalls that Carrillo was actually pretty keen on staying at Watford, and Benfica are completely aware of that.
As reported by them at the time, the player’s agent Elio Casaretto has held a meeting with the Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira last year, showing his client’s will to stay in England.
Vieira has reportedly shown availability to negotiate, but still made it clear that he wanted a considerable amount with the sale. That info goes with the Watford Observer, who claims the president demands €20m.
In case a deal isn’t found, Record claims that Carrillo is expected at Benfica in the summer, even though the club are still not sure if they will be keeping him.
But the interesting thing is that the Observer’s story was all based in reports from Portugal, so we may be just running in circles here. None of the sides know exactly what’s going on, so all this coverage was only worth to reinstate that Carrillo really wants to stay in London.
