Tuesday was a long day for Manchester United fans.
It started with José Mourinho being sacked by the club. Then Mauricio Pochettino was pointed out as the favourite to take charge in the summer, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to be the man to manage the team until then.
That’s when Zinedine Zidane’s name surprisingly came up again. Portuguese radio Antena 1 said they know there’s an agreement with the manager, who should be announced in the next few days.
Pinch of salt for that one.
Now things get stranger, as according to Portuguese newspaper Record, Julen Lopetegui is also a front runner to take charge of Manchester United.
Record writes that the English press have been naming many managers, but he’s one that ‘escaped’. They claim to know that Lopetegui is ‘on the front line to succeed Mourinho at Manchester United’.
It’s stated ‘the good impression’ left by the manager in his time at the Spanish national team puts him ‘among the main candidates’ for the job at Old Trafford.
It’s pretty strange to see such fanciful rumours both coming from Portugal on the same day.
And it’s worth recalling that Manchester United announced that a caretaker would be in charge until the end of the season, and it doesn’t sound like Zidane or Lopetegui would take jobs as interims at this stage of their career.
Maybe the Portuguese media are stirring the pot as some sort of revenge for their sacked compatriot.
