Portuguese side Benfica are reportedly interested in the signing of Gastón Ramírez from Middlesbrough.
As reported by A Bola today, the Eagles have been monitoring the player for a while and now have him on their hit list.
The outlet claims that Ramírez himself likes the idea, as Benfica could provide him the chance to win a league title and compete in the Champions League.
It’s believed that a deal would cost the Portuguese side around €6m, plus the player’s ‘high’ salary. The biggest issue for Benfica is to fight the competition from Premier League clubs, who have better financial resources to convince him to join them.
It’s claimed that Ramirez’ old club Peñarol have also made an approach, but it’s very unlikely that the Uruguayan side could sign him at this stage of his career. Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship is mentioned as the main factor why it would be easy to take the player from the club.
Given how Gaston Ramirez acted in the January transfer window, not all Middlesbrough fans would be sorry to see him go.
