Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia has admitted he is looking to use his loan spell this year to ‘shine’.

The 22-year-old is spending the season on loan at Dutch side SC Cambuur, having once again been shipped out by Everton.

He’s been with the Blues since 2018 after arriving from Arsenal but spent most of the four years in that time out on loan, first with Reading in 2019/20 and then Sporting CP last season.

He barely featured for the Portuguese side last year, with the loan deal proving to be a disappointing one for all involved.

It had included a purchase clause that Everton had hoped would be activated this summer but that did not happen and they have instead sent him to the Netherlands.

He’ll be Cambuur’s first choice this season and admits he is looking to take advantage of that fact, with an eye to being a Premier League regular before too long.

“We came to play against Ajax, in Holland, for the Champions League,” he told Record when explaining how the move came about.

“I played a good game and at the end of the season, there was interest from some Dutch clubs to take me on loan. They contacted me.

“Here I saw the challenge of coming to a different league, at a club where last year the goalkeeper was the one who made the saves. It’s a different league, attacking football, there will be plenty of opportunities to shine.”

“It’s (the Premier League) the top of football. I’ve been at two clubs, the goal is always to get back there.”
