For some time the media closest to Real Madrid have routinely dismissed the club’s chances of signing Harry Kane, Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen.

The reasoning has been that Tottenham Hotspur would demand a huge fee and Florentino Perez is still wary after his previous dealings with Daniel Levy. Madrid’s president doesn’t want to get into a transfer war he may lose and therefore other targets have been preferred.

But things are changing a little, with Eriksen at least.

Luka Modric’s contract with Real Madrid ends in June 2020, by which time the Croatian will be 34 years of age and close to 35. There’s an awareness at Madrid that the midfield needs some work and El Confidencial say that may not fit well with offering Modric a new deal.

Replacements are being looked at, and the first one named by El Confidencial is Eriksen. It’s claimed his contract renewal situation is ‘paralysed’. Madrid know this situation, and are aware others are keen too.

Should the Danish international not have renewed by the summer then it presents a difficult situation for Spurs who will surely have to consider a sale before the prospect of a free transfer appears on the horizon.

Tottenham’s fearsome reputation does exist in Spain, but the contract situation makes what may have been unthinkable, for several clubs and Eriksen, rather more possible.
