At the start of the week, we shared a story about Filip Helander’s struggles at Odense BK since his exit from Rangers.
The defender, who left Rangers for the Danish side last summer, was said to be on the verge of losing the captain’s armband due to his recent poor performances .
Following the big criticism Helander was also getting from the local media, Odense actually took that action, as reported by Fotbollskanalen.
Writing that the club’s management had not been happy with the performances from the former Rangers player, the outlet also brings some quotes from Søren Krogh’s press conference.
“In the work to ensure that we play in the Super League next season as well, I feel this can release more energy in the playing squad. Therefore, it will be Bashkim Kadrii who wears the captain’s armband in tonight’s match against Randers.”
The report claims Helander is still part of the ‘captain group’, as he’s among the players who continue to have an important role in the squad, but won’t be the one wearing the armband on the pitch. Odense are currently two points away from the relegation zone, so are in something of a panic mode.
When leaving Rangers last summer, Helander signed a one-year contract with the Danish side, so it’s very possible that this situation could lead him to a free exit from Odense.
The club haven’t handled it very well and it appears like he’s being thrown out there as the sacrificial lamb to take the hit for poor team form.
After his time with Rangers, maybe Helander will look towards Scotland again.
